Netflix Adds 1984 Films

Netflix’s cinematic gimmick for 2024 is what they’re calling “Milestone Movies” — films that are celebrating big anniversaries this year. And while they already added a collection of 50-year-old titles from 1974, this month they’re uploading more than 20 titles that were originally released in 1984.

Sadly, of the highest-grossing films of 1984, they’re only offering two: “Beverly Hills Cop” (for which Netflix produced a sequel that will stream this summer) and “Footloose.” You’ll have to stream the other films that round out the Top 10 of 1984— including “Ghostbusters,” “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” “Gremlins,” “The Karate Kid” — elsewhere.

Netflix did include that year’s Academy Award for Best Picture winner, “Amadeus,” and another one of the Best Picture nominees, A Passage to India. And while we can vouch for “Amadeus” as a superbly entertaining film, we must admit we can’t confidently name a single star of “A Passage to India.”

The reason the streamer has included certain films, while excluding others, is likely the result of a cold-hearted algorithm. Some combination of the profit of (likely) additional subscriptions plus the financial benefit of minimizing churn less the movie licensing fees has left us with an eclectic bunch of films from our favorite year in cinema. And while there are some fan favorites in the list, a few have left us scratching our heads. What do you think?
